APPENDIX: Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders criteria for compulsive gambling: (American Psychiatric Association 2000)

  • Persistent and recurrent maladaptive gambling behavior
  • Not attributable to mania
  • At least 5 of the following:
    • Preoccupied with gambling
    • Escalates wagers to achieve excitement
    • History of repeated, unsuccessful efforts to control or stop gambling
    • Restless or irritable when attempting to limit gambling
    • Gambles to escape problems or improve dysphoria
    • After losing money, returns to "get even" ("chasing losses")
    • Lies to conceal extent of gambling
    • Committed illegal activities to finance gambling
    • Seeks money from others to resolve a desperate financial situation caused by gambling
    • Jeopardized or lost a significant relationship or educational/career opportunity because of gambling
